Blog-a-Bing: Face Off (part 2): Pizza night
Array Recently I was talking about intelligence and family size, pointing out that the average family IQ is negatively related to the number of children in the family. It is indeed true that the lower the IQ of the parents, the larger the family is likely to be. Also of interest is the finding that, on average, each child in the family will have a lower IQ than the child born immediately before. So in a family of seven kids, the whole family is likely to be of low intelligence and the last child will be the slowest of the bunch. Clearly this is the type of thing that, when mentioned in an undergraduate class, will get the instructor in VERY hot water with the administration and local and state leaders of ethnic communities, who then demand that such heresies, true or not, not be presented to students in public settings.

An article (Houston opera speaking to the streets: Spanish work keeps company relevant, November 6) by William Littler for the Toronto Star speaks to a similar attempt, the premiere of a new work, in Spanish, at the Houston Grand Opera, Daniel Catán’s Salsipuedes (libretto by Eliseo Alberto and Francisco Hinojosa):It used to be said, in the corridors of Toronto’s Opera Atelier, that if people can’t pronounce the name of an opera, they won’t buy tickets. Well aware of the demographic direction of his city, David Gockley, Houston Grand Opera’s general director, some years ago turned to the Mexican composer Daniel Catán to provide his company with its first specially commissioned opera to be sung in Spanish. However, reviews have not been all that positive, for example, Charles Ward’s article (Catán’s ‘Salsipuedes’ sashays rather than struts: It’s entertaining, but it doesn’t have electricity, November 1) for the Houston Chronicle:Despite the fervent hopes of Houston Grand Opera, there was no dancing in the aisles for Daniel Catán’s Salsipuedes, a tale of Love, War and Anchovies. But never did the music provide the electric charge that seemed guaranteed by all the talk about an opera based on Afro-Caribbean rhythms. One of the more interesting recent operas we will be studying, Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, is being performed right now at the San Francisco Opera: see the write-up at Ionarts. (October 26), on the new book mentioned in class, about the creation of an American sound by gay composers Opera by Film Directors (October 23)Lastly, don’t forget to tune in to WETA (90.9 FM) on November 20 at 1:30 pm, to hear the WNO production, from last year, of Andre Previn’s opera A Streetcar Named Desire.

As ever, when the subject of 9/11 comes up, weâre fortunate to turn to the most respected authority on the subject, the author of âWhy America Sleptâ and before that the book that overwhelms almost every aspect of the various JFK assassination conspiracy theories, âCase Closed,â Gerald Posner. Weâre talking about ads that in essence are saying, World Trade Center 7, a building two blocks away from the World Trade Center Towers, really wasnât destroyed by the damage from the planes that went into the other two towers that day. OLBERMANN: He was also, this man, James Walter, was quoted in âThe New York Timesâ yesterday as saying âIt just isnât possible that 19,â this is the quote, â19 screw-ups with box cutters pulled this whole thing off.â Is he right to raise an issue like that that might be in the backs of peopleâs minds for the last three years but has gone off on a tangent here? There are plenty of things leading up to 9/11 and after 9/11 that I would love to have investigated. So why we are allowed to put on something that has no basis in fact, in which there are answers and explanations for all of this, just generating more confusion over the legitimate problems of 9/11.

But this dude is paid to read my blogs⦠so I don’t feel so bad subjecting him to my (at times garbage) posts. The most important thing I took away from tonight was that how a feeling of âno comments’ can dampen even the strongest of blogging spirits (hang in there, mark ). So, next time you read someone’s blog, leave a damn comment ! referencing others’ blogs ======= [4 hours] Writing own ideas for blog posting ======== [2 hours] Editing and checking spelling errors ======== [1 hour] Actual posting on blog =============== [.25 hours] Seeing âno comments’ every week ======== [Priceless] There are some things worth wasting time on, for everything else, there’s Wiley’s class .
